Having Joy in a Broken World

“I have told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world you will have troubles. But be brave! I have defeated the world!” John 16:33 (ERV)

Jesus tells us that we are going to experience troubles in the world, whether that is bullying, sickness, family problems, struggling with school work, or all of the above. But He also tells us that we can have peace and be brave because He has defeated the world. There are so many things and people in life, especially while we are young, that can bring us down. I read a quote that Reggie Dabbs posted on Instagram recently that said

“There are 6,775,235,842 people in the world. Why are you letting one of them ruin your life?”

And that can be so true. We can be so dependent on others for our joy, that when one of them makes a mistake (which is going to happen, we all make them) we lose our joy. Now you’re thinking “You mean to say our joy doesn’t come from our friends or family?” You’re right. Not true joy, anyway. Let me explain…

“You have never seen Jesus, and you don’t see him now. But still you love him and have faith in him, and no words can tell how glad and happy you are to be saved. 1 Peter 1:8-9a (CEV)

The joy that gets us through each day doesn’t come from a new phone, our best friends (although they can offer comfort and great Godly advice), or even from our pets. It comes from God. When we have a relationship with Jesus Christ, we are given love and joy that can’t be offered from anyone or anything around us. In 1 Peter 1 it says

“no words can tell how glad and happy you are to be saved.”

How true that is. The meanest, biggest, darkest things can be thrown at us, but still, we can have joy, because we have the great gift of salvation. One last verse, that is a great encouragement;

“At night we may cry, but when morning comes we will celebrate. Psalm 30:5b (CEV)

There will be people and things that try and come against us, but everyday when we wake up, we have joy, a reason to celebrate. Take some time today to ask God to remind you of His love and joy when you are faced with a tough situation, where others would say there is no joy or hope. Pray that you would be able to have overflowing, contagious joy and that you would cause others around you to be joyful also!
