02 Jun Let Your Light Shine
1 John 2:2-6 (Message Version)
“Here’s how we can be sure that we know God in the right way: Keep his commandments.
If someone claims, “I know him well!” but doesn’t keep his commandments, he’s obviously a liar. His life doesn’t match his words. But the one who keeps God’s word is the person in whom we see God’s mature love. This is the only way to be sure we’re in God. Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.”
If I asked you what being a Christian was all about, what would you say? Would you say that its about learning as much as you can about God? Or aiming to live a life free of sin?
I believe that its all about living a life like Jesus lived. I don’t mean this in the sense that our main purpose in life is to be free of sin, perfect and holy (although these things would be great). If we study the life of Jesus in the bible, we see that everywhere He went, He carried the love and supernatural power of God with Him. Jesus reached out to people who society rejected, showed them mercy and grace, and taught them how to live a life that honours God. Jesus healed beggars, forgave adulterers and spent time with thieves.
Living this kind of life involves maintaining your integrity and being a person of influence, not a person who is influenced. All I want from my life is to have God’s love shine through me, no matter who I am with, regardless of what I am doing. In Matthew 5, it says we are to be a light unto the world. It doesn’t say “turn off your light so the darkness of the world overpowers you”. We allow God’s life to shine through us when we are obedient to His word, when we are generous and loving with others, and when we see a need in someone’s life, and meet it in Jesus’ name. Life is wasted when we make it all about our own selfish gain, rather than focusing on serving God and others. The ways in which we interact with people on a daily basis show if our heart is truly turned towards God.
Of course we stuff up. Sometimes we have bad day; we are judgmental of people we don’t know, mean to our friends, disobedient to our parents and neglect to spend time with God. But God says everyday is a new day in Him, and it brings a chance to try again!
2 Corinthians 12:9 says :‘But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”’.
God is calling you to be a person of love, grace, integrity and obedience. Today is a great day to start living in God’s word and sharing His love with the people in our world. It doesn’t matter if you have made mistakes in the past, God’s love and grace is enough to cover them, and to give you strength to testify of His amazing love.
