Sliding in Eggs

For many of you it may be normal to have a quiet house, but I know in my household noise is almost a daily necessity.

In fact I can recall numerous times when I was younger, and there’s been no noise in the house, mum saying “what are they planning?”. It was in the stillness where my mum would know that my siblings where hatching their next master plan. From repainting our outdoor table to sliding in eggs and tomato sauce across the kitchen floor, you can almost say they had thought of everything. It became such a common occurrence that the quiet atmosphere was nearly one to be afraid of because we didn’t know what was coming next.

Our world, our schedules and our lifestyles can be noisy also.

In the business of it all it’s difficult to distinguish which voices we are really listening to and if we even are finding time to listen in the first place.

Whether your day consists of going to school, music lessons, training for your sports team, keeping on top of homework, catching up with your friends or even all with in one day, it all piles up. Life can become a list of boxes we have to tick. Maybe your list consists of Monday to Friday, checking of all the boxes, hoping the weekend will come that little bit sooner.

But where is God amongst all of this?

I was once going through life, ticking off all the boxes, and continually asking God what His will is. I got to a point where I felt like God wasn’t talking to me, wasn’t answering and I had no idea what he wanted me to do.

That’s when I said “God why aren’t you answering?” and He simply said “Why aren’t you listening?”.

I had go so caught up with my day to day events that I had forgotten the importance of listening.

1 Kings 19:12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. Trying to hear someone whisper in a noisy room is difficult, just like it’s difficult to hear God if we’re not blocking out the other things that are trying to gain our attention. We can hear God in his gentle whisper. To do this sometimes we need to be still. We need to remove distractions and just listen. God can be speaking to us but if we’re not listening we won’t realise.

Psalms 46:10a Be still, and know that I am God

Find time in your day or week to just be still, in the business of life find time for just you and God. You never know what he has for you until you listen.
